Practise right of way

Who goes first? Practise crossroads until you know it without thinking.

Right of way is one of the topics where the most points are lost. Often not because the rule is hard, but because you miss one detail.

So always look at signs, shark's teeth and traffic lights first. Only if there are none do the normal rules apply.

Need to know

  • At an uncontrolled junction, traffic from the right has right of way.
  • At an uncontrolled junction a tram always has right of way, even from the left.
  • If you're coming from an exit, a residential zone or a dirt road, give way to all traffic.
  • When you turn, you give way to traffic on the same road going straight ahead, cyclists too.
  • Let emergency vehicles with flashing lights and a siren through as quickly as it is safe to do so.

Frequently asked questions

Who has right of way at an uncontrolled crossroads?

Traffic from the right. Only a tram always has right of way, even when it comes from the left.

Who has right of way on a roundabout?

If there are shark's teeth or a priority sign at the entrance, traffic on the roundabout has right of way. If not, the normal rule applies: traffic from the right goes first.

Which comes first: a traffic light or shark's teeth?

The traffic light. If the light isn't working or is flashing amber, the signs and give-way markings apply.
