Practise overtaking and merging

Know exactly when you can overtake and how to merge smoothly.

Overtaking comes down to two things: is it allowed here, and can it be done safely. The exam tests both.

Think of zebra crossings, solid lines and oncoming traffic you underestimate.

Need to know

  • As a rule, you overtake on the left.
  • Overtaking on the right is allowed if the vehicle in front has moved to the left to turn left.
  • You don't overtake just before or on a zebra crossing.
  • You may not cross a solid line.
  • When lanes merge, you merge in turn at the end of the lane.

This is how it appears in the exam. In the clips, watch for indicators. A car indicating left behind a lorry is probably about to overtake.

Frequently asked questions

Can you overtake on the right?

Only in special cases, for example when the driver in front is turning left and has moved into the left lane, or in queues across several lanes.

Can you overtake at a junction?

It's not prohibited, but it is risky. Only do it if it's safe and you have a good view.

What is zip merging?

When two lanes merge, drive on to the end of your lane and merge in turn.
