Practise motorway theory

Merging, matrix signs and breakdowns: practise everything you need to know for the motorway.

Everything goes faster on the motorway. That's why the exam asks about merging, choosing lanes and what the signs above the road mean.

Ignoring a red cross or merging too late costs you points in the exam and safety in real life.

Need to know

  • Keep to the right as much as possible, except when overtaking.
  • Use the slip road to get up to speed.
  • A red cross above your lane: leave that lane as soon as it's safe.
  • The hard shoulder is for breakdowns and emergencies.
  • Only motor vehicles that can and may drive at least 60 km/h are allowed on the motorway.

This is how it appears in the exam. Matrix signs come up a lot. Learn the red cross, the diagonal arrow and the speed in a red ring.

Frequently asked questions

What does a red cross above your lane mean?

The lane is closed. Move to another lane as soon as it's safe.

When can you use the hard shoulder?

For breakdowns or emergencies. Not for making a quick call or avoiding a traffic jam.

What do you do if you break down on the motorway?

Move as far to the right as possible, switch on your hazard lights, put on a safety vest if you have one and stand behind the crash barrier.
