Practise driver assistance systems (ADAS)

Cruise control, lane assist and emergency braking: know what they do and what they don't.

Modern cars have more and more driver assistance systems. They help you, but they don't take over your responsibility.

Questions on this almost always come down to one rule: you remain the driver.

Need to know

  • Adaptive cruise control keeps a distance from the vehicle in front, but you stay responsible.
  • Lane assist helps keep you between the lines. Your hands stay on the wheel.
  • An emergency braking system is a safety net. You still keep enough distance.
  • A blind spot warning doesn't replace checking your own mirrors and looking over your shoulder.
  • Sensors and cameras work less well in snow, rain or when the car is dirty.

Frequently asked questions

Who is responsible when cruise control keeps the distance?

You, as the driver. The system only helps.

Do driver assistance systems always work?

No. In snow, rain, dirt or with poorly visible lines they may work less well or not at all.

What does ABS do?

ABS stops your wheels from locking when you brake hard, so you can keep steering.
